First of all, home renovations are a big investment on the part of any home owner. We want to make sure that when you embark on that journey you are ready and, more importantly, you don’t waste your valuable time & effort on a less than fruitful labor. Below are 5 tips to ensure you don’t go from the perfect dream home to the drab, unfinished, and expensive waste of time.

1. Buying Cheap Materials

The foundation upon which anything is built is the most important element. As you would be concerned with a poor foundation for your home, you should be with any materials you use for projects within it.

With building materials it is often the case that you get what you pay for, so when you go for a project simply remember to budget for the proper materials. If you cannot afford what you really need, the solution is wait NOT to rush.

2. Gutting Everything (Without A Plan)

When you take part in any home renovation its easy to get carried away. There is so much excitement, and so many possibilities. All of the sudden the walls aren’t bright enough, there’s not enough open space. They all must go!

Of course we encourage excitement in creativity within your home, that’s why we’re in this business. But you need to remember to make sure you have a plan, take good measurements, and do any other relevant prep work to your project. Nobody likes this part of the process, but what is demolished DOES NOT RETURN.

It is wise to remind yourself of this when you get involved and excited about your renovation. Keep your walls for now, you’ll miss them when they are gone.

3. Using the Wrong tools

This is a very close second to materials. Someone once said, “A person is only as good as the tools they have at their disposal” and this was not without reason. Tools are how you fashion everything in your design.

Make sure you take the time and effort between everything else going on in your renovation to get the right tools for the job, and learn how use them, or you’re going to have some disappointing results.

4. Think the Space ALL the Way Through

Make certain you think through how much space you will need and why. It’s not simply about the square footage you require to hold the items you desire. Also think about breath-ability, clarity, and theme. All of these play an important role the in the finished product of your home renovation.

Small doors, poor lighting, narrow hallways/staircases, and claustrophobic bathrooms are all perfect examples of these kinds of mistakes. Check out this article to see some scary mistakes.

The last thing you want is for your design to come to fruition, and then feel suffocated or unimpressed by it.

5. Hiring the Wrong Contractor

The person you choose to do your project is part of your own personal vision and has access to your home. They have control of your project and how they communicate with you is EXCEEDINGLY important as time goes on.

You need to take the time to check their reviews, and figure out how they are going to make you a part of the process. There is nothing worse than anxiously awaiting a call for days over something that could have been fixed or talked through in minutes.
